The Right Care at Baptist Podcast

Right Care at Baptist is the official CME podcast for the medical staff at Baptist Memorial Health Care. Chief Medical Information Officer Dr. Jake Lancaster covers important and timely clinical information, including in-depth discussions on our COVID-19 response, treatments, therapies and administrative processes with experts across the Baptist system.

COVID-19 Treatment Options are Changing

As the Omicron variant of COVID-19 becomes more prevalent, treatment options for those with moderate to severe symptoms are rapidly changing as well. Recent data indicates that the current monoclonal antibody treatments available may not be effective against the Omicron variant.

Therefore, some Baptist locations have paused the administration of monoclonal antibody therapy as we wait on the arrival of the new product, Sotrovimab, which is effective against Omicron. Some of Baptist’s locations are anticipating having access to Sotrovimab in January 2022. Baptist’s locations are focusing the administration of any remaining inventory of monoclonal antibody therapy to people ages 65 and up and the immunocompromised.

For more information, see the NIH guidelines for treatment options.

Oral Antivirals Receive EUA

The FDA has approved two new oral antiviral medications for Emergency Use Authorization. Paxlovid (Fact Sheet) and Molnupiravir (Fact Sheet) will be made available to the public in January through commercial pharmacies and select Baptist locations. These medications will require a prescription from a provider and should be used as soon as possible after a positive test and symptom onset. As supply becomes available in pharmacies, it will be limited and should be reserved for high-risk individuals, including those ages 65 and older and the immunocompromised.
