The Internal Medicine Residency program pending accreditation at Baptist Memorial Hospital–North Mississippi stands poised to offer a well-rounded and unique training experience for physicians in a high volume setting with advanced technology, innovative techniques, and experienced and accessible faculty.
Coming July 2021
In May 2020, an application was submitted to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to establish a new Internal Medicine Residency program at Baptist North Mississippi in Oxford. Baptist North Mississippi completed an ACGME accreditation site visit in September, and the final accreditation decision is expected to be made in late January. Our goal is to welcome the first class of residents to Oxford in July 2021.
About the Program
A core faculty and teaching staff with decades of experience laid the groundwork for an innovative and first-class learning and working experience that centers around mentorship, leadership, camaraderie, resilience, and well-being.
With Baptist Memorial Medical Education as its sponsoring institution, the program’s residents will be fully prepared to practice medicine by mastering the required curricula, disciplines, and technologies to succeed as internal medicine physicians.
The highly focused, tailored program that is planned offers residents the chance to train alongside some of the brightest minds in the region. The curriculum is designed to promote a culture of resilience through intervals of intense training and more relaxed learning experiences.

Seger S. Morris, DO, MBA, FACOI, FACP
Program Director
Dr. Seger Morris is an active member in a variety of professional associations. He serves as President of the Mississippi Osteopathic Medical Association, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Osteopathic Foundation, the Bureau of Federal Health Programs at the American Osteopathic Association, and the Government Affairs Committee at the American College of Osteopathic Internists. Additionally, he is past-Chair of the Seminar and Program Planning Committee for the Mississippi Osteopathic Association and a member of the Bureau of OMED for the American Osteopathic Association – both of these roles involved planning regional and national CME conferences.
He is an accomplished speaker and lectures regionally and nationally on a variety of topics ranging from physician leadership, to medical billing and coding, to clinical internal medicine topics.
In his prior role as a core faculty member of another successful rural internal medicine residency program, he developed and implemented a curriculum to train all students and residents in foundational knowledge in healthcare quality and patient safety. Similarly, the Baptist North Mississippi program will culminate in all trainees at the program earning their Basic Certificate in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and active engagement in continuous improvement projects at the institution.
Committed to lifelong learning and his development as a physician leader and educator, Dr. Morris has completed many leadership and faculty development courses and seminars, including the ACGME Course “Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment,” the CMO Academy by the American Association for Physician Leadership, Certificate in Physician Leadership for Hospital Medicine by the American College of Physicians and American Association for Physician Leadership, and the TIPS Health Policy Fellowship by the New York Institute of Technology-College of Osteopathic Medicine (in collaboration with the American Osteopathic Association and American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine). Additionally, he has been a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (National Association for Healthcare Quality) from 2017-2020 and is a candidate for certification (September 2020) as a Certified Physician Executive (American Association for Physician Leadership).
Jacob R. Whelan, MD
Associate Program Director
In his role as Assistant Medical Director of the Hospitalist Group at Baptist Memorial Hospital -North Mississippi for the last five years, Dr. Jacob Whelan has mentored and trained dozens of new physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants while leading educational programs in the practice of hospital medicine to orient and acquaint them with the local culture and organization. To enhance his administrative, educational, and leadership skills in this role, he attends the annual leadership development conference hosted by Schumacher Clinical Partners while tirelessly enhancing his skills through self-directed professional improvement resources.
As a life-long learner and passionate teacher, he became a Certified Epic Builder in January 2019, enhancing his role as Physician Informaticist for Baptist North Mississippi. This certification also provides Dr. Whelan a strong background to assist the Internal Medicine Residency program in providing the clinical documentation and data management framework to support quality improvement initiatives while maximizing EHR efficiency for the entire academic team.
As a testament of Dr. Whelan’s clinical, teaching, and leadership skills, he was recognized as the consummate physician at Baptist North Mississippi and awarded Physician of the Year for the organization in 2019.
In addition to his roles in clinical supervision, delivering didactic lectures, and otherwise training and evaluating residents, Dr. Whelan will lead the development of inpatient curriculum and the integration of academic internal medicine teams with the current hospitalist group. He also serves as Chair of the Clinical Competency Committee, and is a member of the Program Evaluation Committee and the Clinical Learning Environment Review Committee.
