OB-GYN Residency Program Overview

Baptist Women’s Hospital's OB-GYN Residency Program is a comprehensive program with an emphasis on exposure to surgical, clinical and one-on-one instruction in multiple specialties, including obstetrics, gynecologic pelvic disorders, maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women is the first freestanding women’s hospital in the region and the leading hospital in Shelby County for deliveries and gynecologic procedures. With more than 5,000 births annually, Baptist Women’s Hospital offers medical residents the unique opportunity to work with a large and diverse patient population. Recognized for providing high-quality care, Baptist Women’s Hospital is a national leader in preventing postpartum hemorrhage and treating preeclampsia.

Additionally, Baptist Women's Hospital is a faith-based organization and a member of the elite Council of Women’s and Infants’ Specialty Hospitals (CWISH), a premier group of select not-for-profit hospitals that are leaders in providing services to women and infants.

Residency Program Objectives and Principles

With more than 5,000 births a year, Baptist Women’s Hospital’s OB-GYN residents can expect to gain hands-on experience and exposure to a high volume and high acuity of cases. Residents will learn how to do the following:

• Work effectively in various health care settings and systems, including inpatient and outpatient settings, private physician offices and clinics that care for underinsured/uninsured patients, and mobile clinics that care exclusively for indigent and homeless populations
• Coordinate comprehensive care for general obstetric and high-risk maternity patients in a 22-hospital system; Baptist Women’s Hospital offers critical care medical transport, an OB triage center, an OB ICU and an antepartum unit
• Collaborate and communicate with specialty patient care providers, including maternal addiction care specialists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, urogynecologists, physical therapists, gynecologic oncologists and fertility specialists
• Incorporate cost containment and risk-benefit analysis in patient care, especially for low-income patients
• Advocate for quality care and optimal patient care systems, including tracking patient outcomes, identifying health disparities, addressing the opioid crisis, and adhering to evolving privacy regulations and requirements
• Work on multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient safety and quality care through exposure and participation on hospital committees, such as a QAPI council (Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement), breast health conferences, service lines and tumor boards

Mission

To train excellent physicians in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology who will provide high quality, safe and cost-effective patient and family- centered care for women in the Mid-South region, upholding the greater Baptist Memorial Health Care mission of "Healing, Preaching and Teaching."

Goals

1. Provide education that meets or exceeds ACGME and board requirements while incorporating the Baptist mission tenets throughout the curriculum.
2. Prepare residents to anticipate and serve the unique needs of Women's Health Care in the Mid-South.
3. To produce physician leaders who are dedicated to promoting quality improvement in Women's Health Care.
