Why did you choose Baptist?
Baptist had everything I wanted in a program: the potential autonomy, the number of cases, generous moonlighting opportunities, a sense of trust among the residents and staff, and a reputation for making residents and radiologists who can excel wherever they chose to practice. I think that the volume of attendings who return to work for the program speaks highly of it.
What is your day like?
A typical diagnostic day consists of showing up to work with your morning beverage of choice, putting final interpretations on overnight residents' preliminary reads, then going through your list a batch at a time until lunch. Then we will get lunch from the doctor's lounge, go to lunch lecture, then return in the afternoon to repeat the AM routine until it's time to go home! Often, we are visited by other physicians with questions, imaging technologists with questions or reports, or go perform fluoroscopic procedures. The biggest challenge is the volume of information that there is to learn and retain. But the best part of my day comes from the feeling of making a difference, whether it's helping the surgeon plan their procedure or completing a lumbar puncture where the patient says, "have you started yet doc?"
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
You can’t beat the low cost of living in Memphis, and Shelby Farms is an incredible park. There are plenty of great places to eat, the Orpheum Theater is fabulous, and there are some amazing camping and hiking areas in the surrounding areas.
Why did you choose radiology as a career?
I chose Radiology as a field because you get to play a key role in pretty much every patient's care who comes to the hospital. The diverse pathology always keeps things interesting.

The collegial atmosphere, preparation for private practice, and moonlighting are all unmatched.

Why did you choose Baptist?
The people and the place. I interviewed at many places that I believe would have provided good clinical training to prepare me for a career in Radiology. The reason I chose Baptist is because of the excellent staff and other residents. I believe we have a unique staff-resident experience that really provides a great learning experience while in residency here. It's a great feeling knowing that whoever you go to work with on a given day will be someone you respect and will enjoy working with and learning from. Also, Memphis is my hometown, and I felt very fortunate to be able to match at a program that both fits my personality well and is in a city I love.
What is your day like? Any challenges? What's rewarding about your day?
As a first year resident, there is a real challenge in understanding how to "learn radiology" and be a competent physician at the same time. I think it's important to understand my limitation as a first year, who is just now learning many different imaging modalities and procedures, but to also try to challenge myself to always be improving. There is a steep learning curve, but it is very rewarding to be able to see the progress and feel more comfortable as rotations progress. I will say that in all my days of feeling extremely stupid trying to read and dictate things I may not understand, I have never once felt like my attendings or co-residents have viewed or treated me that way. Although we are a very busy residency program, it is the complete opposite of "malignant" program.
What is your favorite thing about Memphis?
The food and the proximity to great hunting and fishing. Since it's my hometown, I feel very fortunate to be going through residency with so many close friends and family in town.
What made you decide on your career? Was there someone or something in your life that helped you choose your path?
I love the diversity of radiology and the way we interact with nearly every medical and surgical specialty. We have a unique opportunity to interact with other physicians in helping treat and diagnose patients.
Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?
It's an excellent environment for clinical radiology. We have a diverse, experienced staff who are both enjoyable to work with and eager to teach. There is a tremendous amount of volume in every area of radiology that provides a great educational experience during residency and prepares our residents for practice when training is complete.

About Dexter

Why did you choose Baptist?
Residents have a high volume of studies across every subspecialty. Additionally, each residents is trained to become comfortable and confident making patient care decisions before graduating, particularly during night coverage and moonlighting.
What is your day like?
The average day is busy. The volume is a key strength of the residency. Although it takes a few months to acclimate, eventually the workday seems to pass faster with the heavy workloads.
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
My favorite thing about Memphis is definitely the food. There's no shortage of new restaurants to try and the cost of living is relatively low.
Why did you choose radiology as a career?
Radiology is one of the only specialties to participate in the care of virtually every patient in the hospital. I was drawn to this specialty because of the pivotal nature of radiology for patient care.

The program will definitely provide each resident with the tools to excel in their future job. Baptist residents graduate with confidence and exposure that is difficult to match at other programs.

Why did you choose Baptist?
Personally, I chose to do residency at Baptist after a conversation with the Program Director that single-handedly convinced me to choose Radiology as a career and to come to Memphis. The combination of the staff camaraderie, autonomy, and resident benefits were very enticing. I've been grateful for that decision every day since, and being a resident here has been better than I ever expected any residency could be.
What is your day like? Any challenges? What's rewarding about your day?
My day varies greatly based on my scheduled rotation. Most days are 8-5, but like most medical professionals I may be in the hospital at any hour of the day. Most days consist of a mix of high-volume diagnostic studies, fluoroscopic procedures, educational conferences, and physician-to-physician interaction. I am continually challenged by the wide array of pathologies we diagnose and treat. We provide coverage for about 10 Baptist hospitals in addition to outpatient facilities giving the residency a wealth of educational opportunities. I find personal gratification in making diagnosis in acute and complex disease processes which allow for prompt patient treatment and improved outcomes. I also find fulfillment in combining my training in diagnostic imaging, patient care, and technical procedural skills to perform minimally-invasive interventional procedures.
What is your favorite thing about Memphis?
Memphis has a ton to offer in great food, music, sports, and outdoor activities. I really appreciate how convenient life here is. As a resident, I can easily live in close proximity to the hospital, visit family, and go from the reading room to running trails at Shelby Farms Park in a matter of minutes.
Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?
I believe if you come to Baptist you will leave more ready to jump out into practice than from anywhere else. You will acquire confidence from the gradual autonomy and high caseload coupled with a solid educational foundation. You will have the opportunity to form outstanding mentorship relationships with the staff and be treated with respect. Residents are routinely successful in transitioning into the subspecialty fields of their choice. I highly recommend coming to Memphis to check out the program!

Day to day life of a resident varies dependent on the rotation. Each day is a learning experience with educational opportunities from other residents and attendings.

Memphis is a perfect sized city for the lifestyle I desire. While there are restaurants and many options for things to do, it is still small enough where traffic is light, cost of living is low and professional connections are easy to make and maintain.

As a biochem major I was extremely interested in the fine details and structural elements. Going through medical school, I always enjoyed anatomy and in my 4th year had the opportunity to spend some time in the reading room and loved it. It combines a lot of my inherent interests and requires attention to detail–something I enjoy.

Baptist offers a wide variety of radiological experiences within a single network system. Rather than adjusting to potentially different EMR systems or cultures, you can focus on being a better radiologist.

What is your day like? Any challenges? What's rewarding about your day?
There isn’t a typical day as a resident. I just try to do my work as efficiently and accurately as possible and give myself time to rest towards the end of the day. My job as a resident is to make my attending's job as easy as possible and to learn as much as I can. It is rewarding to make an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment plan. It is challenging and frustrating at times when you can’t remember something that you should be able to in order to be more efficient.
What is your favorite thing about Memphis?
Very cultured. Lots of fun things to do and good restaurants. I'm sure I will be able to add more to this once I've lived there.
What made you decide on your career? Was there someone or something in your life that helped you choose your path?
I liked how radiology related to every aspect of medicine and allowed us to help all kinds of patients/specialists. Several family friend physicians stated that they would do radiology if they could go back. Not one specific person, just every physician I asked said to do radiology and that they wish they had done radiology also.

Radiology is a very friendly place and has great training. There are plenty of imaging studies for every resident to have more than adequate training.

After rotating through Baptist in Medical school, it was clear to me that Baptist would be my
first choice. The culture and the program suited my personality and my professional goals. The
collegial teaching and learning atmosphere makes it more enjoyable and easier to learn. After
seeing the large number of studies read by radiology residents, accompanied by quality teaching
and mentoring, I was certain I would be well trained after four years in the program.
What is your day like? Any challenges? What's rewarding about your day?
Depending on the specific rotation, my day starts at 7 or 8 am. I start dictating studies, answering phone calls, reviewing studies with the attendings. At lunchtime, the residents attend a noon conference while enjoying food from the our esteemed Baptist physician lounge. After noon conference, it's back to dictating studies. Certainly, there are many challenges. Chief among the challenges is finding the time, focus and energy to tackle the steep learning curve in the early stages of the residency. Although challenging, it is quite rewarding to know my training will allow me to be a member of a profession that values being the best I can be, so that I might help others.
What is your favorite thing about Memphis?
Memphis is big enough to have diversity in many things, such as food, entertainment, education and people. I suppose my favorite right now is food.
What made you decide on your career? Was there someone or something in your life that helped you choose your path?
Radiology is appealing to me because I find it engaging to see a vast array of interesting pathology while reading different modalities of imaging. Radiology also plays to my strengths, and is a good fit for my personality and interests.
There are many people that helped set me on this path. These included my parents, teachers, coaches, and associates. Some helped me see what I could do. Others inadvertently helped by showing me what I shouldn’t do. Both have been instrumental in setting me on this path.
Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?
The combination of a vast study volume, quality teaching and a collegial atmosphere assures one will be pleased with the program and prepared for a successful professional career. This is evident in the excellent fellowships offered to Baptist radiology residents.

The collegial atmosphere really stood out. Also, I felt Baptist would be the best place for me to train in order to be prepared for private practices. The moonlighting is exceptional and it's nice to have extra income for my family. The proximity to my family was also important to me.
What is your day like?
My day usually starts at 7 or 8 a.m. by putting on final reads on the overnight scans. Throughout the morning, we read scans depending on the rotation and check with the attending as we read. A few minutes before noon, we leave the reading room to grab some free lunch at the doctors’ lounge before heading to daily noon conference. After noon conference, I usually stop by Ms. Angela's office to grab some snacks and chat with my fellow residents before heading back to the reading room to finish out the day. At 4 or 5 p.m., I leave and head home. I usually try to study for at least 30 minutes to an hour at home each evening. The learning curve is incredibly steep in radiology, which is challenging, but it is rewarding when you start to see progress.
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
The food and entertainment. The BBQ is exceptional and there are also many good steakhouses in the area. There's a lot to do, especially for a family in the Memphis area. Shelby Farms is incredible.

Why did you choose Baptist?
I chose Baptist because of the staff, the residents that they attract, and the method of training MSIT provides. The staff are very personable and laid back, but at the same time they have high expectations from day one that the residents work hard and get better every day. All of the residents that come here are great to be around and make the daily grind enjoyable. The training here at Baptist stresses high volume and autonomy which is the primary reason I chose this program.
What is your day like?
The schedule depends on the rotation, but typically it will be 7-4 or 8-5. I get to the hospital, get settled at my reading station, look over any procedures I may have that day, and then start dictating any studies that are ready. Noon conference is every day from 12-1 and is either in typical lecture format or case based, which is more interactive.
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
I live in an area near the hospital that is very family friendly and there are a lot of parks to enjoy, especially Shelby Farms which is one of the largest parks in the US and is right near the hospital.
Why did you choose radiology as a career?
I never wanted to go into a field where I would have a very narrow scope of practice. Radiology has always appealed to me because it encompasses the entire human body, and looking at imaging just came naturally to me and made sense. In our specialty, every single day is different because you never know what you might see.

I liked that they did independent overnight call, have a large amount of volume, and enjoyed the people I met on my interview.
