Why did you choose Baptist?
I chose Baptist because of the excellent clinical experience residents receive. I was also impressed by the medical staff who are very focused on resident education and ensuring residents are well prepared. The facilities and health care infrastructure are also excellent and allow for delivery of high quality patient care.
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
My favorite thing about Memphis is all the different activities there are to do around the city. A few of my favorites are the Levitt Shell, the Memphis Grizzlies, Shelby Farms, Overton Park, and the Cooper-Young District. There is always something going on in the city.
What is your day like? Any challenges?What's rewarding about your day?
As a healthcare provider, there are many daily challenges and obstacles that have to be overcome in taking care of a patient. I take pride in knowing that my knowledge and skills that I have developed are improving someone else’s life which makes the effort well worth it.
Why did you choose your career? Was there someone or something in your life that helped you choose your path?
Family medicine offers me the ability to offer a high level of care in a specialty that I find very rewarding. I love the “problem solving” aspect of family medicine as well as being on the front line and using medical knowledge to improve the lives of others. My goal in life is to help others who are in need, and family medicine offers the ability to combine a broad array of medical knowledge and the ability to directly work with and improve the lives of patients.
Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?

About Rounak: I grew up in Los Angeles and attended the University of California, Irvine, where I majored in Biology. For medical school, I went to Ross University on the island of Dominica. While at Ross University, I was able to enjoy hobbies such as hiking and travelling while studying medicine. I’ve travelled across America, Europe, Asia, and hope to one day go to Bhutan or Namibia. I’m deeply passionate about working with and educating underserved communities and I hope to have more opportunities to do that at Baptist.
Why did you choose Baptist? :
I chose Baptist because of the environment and connection I felt the day I interviewed. I really felt that the program’s values meshed with my own and felt that I could achieve my goals and could grow as a physician here. Baptist is also located in a great city that has amazing food. I am looking forward to more fun times in this great city during my time as a resident here.
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
I would definitely say the people. They have been so kind and welcoming here.
Why medicine as a career?
I chose my career because I believe strongly in primary care and preventive medicine. Growing up, my family would take summer vacations in Bangladesh and noticed first hand the problems that develop without access to care. This inspired me to go into medicine and I hope to one day give back and open a mobile clinic there.

Why did you choose Baptist?
I chose Baptist because of the quality of the hospital system and specifically the Family Medicine Residency Program’s unique faith-based collaboration with Church Health which truly cares for people in all aspects of their lives, not simply just as medical patients.
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
Being brand-new to Memphis, I am excited to get to know the city and the people.
What is your day like?
I look forward to each new day hopefully bringing a variety of experiences and new opportunities to interact with and care for people.
Why medicine as a career?
While studying engineering in college, I broke my ankle, requiring surgery and physical therapy. It was this experience that initially sparked my interest in medicine, seeing firsthand the interplay between the science of medicine and the daily interaction with patients. I love science, but I am also a “people person” and was drawn to this opportunity to more directly care for people every day. I appreciate that the specialty of Family Medicine provides variety all across the spectrum, which especially fits with my personality of loving variety and having a broad range of interests.

Scott Parker, MD
Dr. Parker is Memphis native. He was born and raised in the suburbs of Memphis, TN. He completed his undergraduate studies at Christian Brothers University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and graduated from Univeristy of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in May of 2018. Dr. Parker is committed to serving the underserved and is inspired by the special bond that Family Medicine allows to form between provider and patient. When Dr. Parker is not working, he enjoys running and cycling on the city’s greenlines and trails. Dr. Parker will complete his residency in 2021.

Angelle Anderson, MD
Dr. Angelle Anderson was born in Fort Worth, TX. She attended the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2014. Afterwards, she attended Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN and received a Master of Health Science in 2015, which further led to matriculation through the medical program and graduation in 2019. Her hobbies include dancing and trying different restaurants and coffee shops. Dr. Anderson will complete her residency in 2022.

About Adriana: Dr. Adriana Gonzalez-Canal is a first-generation Cuban-American that was born in Miami and raised in Florida. She is a graduate of Ross University School of Medicine and Florida State University. In addition to pursuing medicine, Dr. Gonzalez-Canal also has a passion for exercise that led her to being certified as an Exercise Physiologist by the American College of Sports Medicine. She believes in taking herself out of her comfort zone, whether be it challenging herself in the hospital or skydiving. She has grown up playing sports and loves to be part of a team. Dr. Gonzalez-Canal is relentless, enthusiastic, and refuses to go a day without making someone laugh. Dr. Gonzalez-Canal will complete her residency in 2022.
Why did you choose Baptist?
Baptist Hospital and the Church Health Center have a progressive way of thinking that coincides with my own rationale. The emphasis on exercise and nutrition, and overall harmony in a person's life, is what attracted me to this program.
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
I love the quiet, homey feel of this city. They often call it the biggest small town in the South, and I can see why.
What is your day like?
There really is no such thing as a typical day for me as my experiences constantly change based on the patients I am caring for. But if there’s one thing consistent about my days as a resident, it’s the feeling of accomplishment as I overcome new challenges.
Why medicine as a career?
My father was a physician and I always admired his passion for medicine. I've wanted to be a doctor since I could remember, and I am happy to say I have never strayed from that path.

About Charquincy: Dr. Charquincy Hollowell is a native Memphian. He attended the University of South Alabama, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. He earned his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. Prior to matriculating into medical school, Dr. Hollowell enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served in several force protection and communication leadership roles. He was deployed three times in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends, football and riding motorcycles. Dr. Hollowell will complete his residency in 2022.
Why did you choose Baptist?
I chose Baptist because of its unique faith-based approach to medicine. I didn't want a program that treated patients as just a constellation of symptoms, but as a whole person: body, mind, and spirit.
Why medicine as a career?
I've always known that I wanted a career in medicine, but I needed a specialty that wasn't mundane. I found that field during my family medicine rotation. In one day, I treated congestive heart failure, participated in a code, and assisted in delivering a baby and from that day, I was hooked on family medicine.
Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?
Because they take care of you. They even feed you, which for a resident is an important factor. The extensive hospital system that is Baptist ensures that you will benefit from the variety of clinical hospital opportunities that are available. Additionally, their benefit package is competitive.

About Esha: Dr. Esha Sharma is originally from Mumbai, India and attended medical school at K.J. Somaiya Medical College in Mumbai affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. Dr. Sharma also holds a master’s degree in public health (MPH) with an Epidemiology/Biostatistics specialization from Washington University in St. Louis. She has served as a volunteer physician in a welfare home for children that worked towards preventing second generation human trafficking in Mumbai. Dr. Sharma’s academic interests include understanding the behavioral aspect of diseases and promoting preventative medicine and holistic approach to have healthy communities. Her personal interests include stain glass painting, travelling and watching horror and thriller movies. Dr. Sharma will complete her residency in 2022.
Why did you choose Baptist?
The Baptist Memorial/Church Health Family Medicine residency program has a unique emphasis on training physicians to serve vulnerable populations. It aligns perfectly with my goal of practicing medicine with a holistic approach and promoting preventative medicine to have healthy communities.
Why medicine as a career?
In India, my grandfather’s work as a pandit, which is equivalent to a priest, provided me with the example of how counseling and social support improved the quality of life of people with terminal illnesses. He would tell me stories that reinforced the need for human connectedness and ongoing psychosocial support in our community. It was quite evident that there was an obvious link between our physical health and our social environment. After graduating medical school, with a desire to practice medicine with a holistic approach, I started my journey as a general practitioner in India.
Why would you recommend Baptist to a prospective applicant?
I recommend Baptist to anyone who wants experience with diverse patient population. Everyone in the program is always willing to help and you get to experience high quality patient care at Baptist, making the learning experience that much more worthwhile. And residents receive intimate training in taking care of the underserved patient population.

Sunny Brahmbhatt

About Sunny
Sunny was born in Jersey City, NJ, and raised in Chesapeake, VA. He went to the Medical University of Lublin right after high school to pursue his MD. While there, he was lucky to be able to come home during the summers and participate in several volunteer activities that solidified his desire to help his community grow and flourish. Sunny aspires to leave a positive impact wherever he is, and hopefully inspire and motivate others to do the same.
Why did you choose Baptist?
Because it was a place that wanted me to not only become the best physician I can be, but it also encouraged me to grow as a person, and leave a positive impact on the community I have the privilege of serving.
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
My favorite thing about Memphis is the hospitality and kindness of everyone, and also the great food.
Why medicine as a career?
I chose my career after seeing a need for a cohesive, holistic response to help those that are in need, and my desire to forge a strong relationship with those around me. I was further inspired to go into Family Medicine by a quote from my guru, which states "In the joy of others, lies our own.”

I would recommend Baptist due to its inviting atmosphere, and its focus on providing the best care possible while helping it's residents grow into capable physicians and leaders for the future.

About Melanie
Melanie overcame a number of obstacles to arrive here. Her journey from the Williamsburg projects in Brooklyn, NY, to college, med school and becoming a Resident at Baptist has had its share of challenges, but her determination and spirit has seen her through. “The road to your future isn’t always easy,” says Melanie, “but the hard and unsure parts make getting to your destination worth it.”
Why did you choose Baptist?
I chose Baptist because of a few reasons. The residents share an undeniable camaraderie and are visibly happy to be doing what they love. The best part was the service Baptist provides to its community and those in need, and not just medical support but support in all aspects in their life. I feel at Baptist I will gain the tools I need to become the kind of Doctor I always wanted to be.
What do you find rewarding about your work?
What I find rewarding in my day is that after a productive day at work, I can also meet with friends or relax at home to decompress and get ready for the next day.
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
In Memphis, you get the best of both worlds. You get a city feel downtown with the busy streets and booming night life, and you also can have some quiet and tranquility just a few miles out of the city.
Why medicine as a career?
I chose this career because since I could remember, I have always wanted a career in which I made a difference, even if it was only in one person’s life. I also wanted a career in which I can do a lot good for the underserved, and it brought me to medicine.

I would recommend Baptist because I feel Baptist makes intelligent, competent, and compassionate doctors. Doctors most patients want to see and all patients deserve.

About Colee
Colee was born and raised in Alexandria, Va. She is a graduate of Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, and attended medical school at Ross University in Portsmouth, Dominica. Collee performed a global health rotation at St. Francis Hospital in Nagalama, Uganda, an experience that made an indelible impression on her life and her approach to medicine. She looks forward to being able to open up her own practice focused on underserved communities.
Why did you choose Baptist?
I choose Baptist because I wanted learn about medicine from a different perspective. Baptist focuses on healing all aspects of the patient including the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. I wanted to go to a residency that would give me all the tools that I need in order to become the best physician possible and Baptist is that place.
What do you find rewarding about your work?
The most rewarding part of my day is knowing that I am helping people every day. I get to wake up to a job that is all about healing and helping people.
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
My favorite thing about Memphis is the music. Memphis is the city where Blues music originated from and I look forward to going out and hearing some local Blues artists.
Why medicine as a career?
My mother was a pediatric nurse for over twenty years and the experiences she shared motivated me to pursue a career as a physician. Well before attending medical school or even college, she planted the seeds that would grow into my drive to become a support system for my future patients. I can recall the emphasis she placed on this aspect of my future career each time that she advised and encouraged me. Because of her influence, I approach every patient as an opportunity to make a difference.

About Mohammed
Mohammed was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. After attending the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), he did a post-baccalaureate at Hofstra University in Long Island before starting Medical School at St. George's University. His studies allowed him to travel quite a bit. Having lived in Los Angeles, New York, Kansas City and Toronto, Mohammed is now looking forward to embarking on his new chapter in Memphis with Baptist Memorial.
Why did you choose Baptist?
I chose Baptist Memorial because of the values it believes in. I wanted to be a part of a program that not just treats patients, but makes its residents part of a community. It is a program and vision I most identified with and a reflection of the kind of physician that I aspire to be throughout my career.
What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
Memphis feels like a large small town. It gives you the amenities of a large city while not losing the charm and hospitality that is so famous in the South. It is an affordable city with a rich history and a wonderful people.
Why medicine as a career?
My decision to pursue family medicine was based on the fact that family medicine is a conglomeration of other specialties, and is the gateway by which many patients receive specialized healthcare. Personally speaking, family care is not just a synonym for primary care. It fosters personal relationships that will last in community strength through and across generations.

Baptist gives its residents a great clinical experience and excellent facilities to learn in. It has a superior staff that is focused on resident education and prepare their residents to deliver the highest level of care.
